Oregano ( Origanum vulgare ) is a well-known herb, aromatic and herbaceous and its height ranges from 20-80 cm. It thrives even in dry stony soils. The flowers are white-purple and bloom mainly in summer, from June to August, depending on the region. The oregano is collected during the flowering of the plant, these flowers are dried in special sheds or dryers and then rubbed and sieved.

The oregano that was known in Ancient Greece as “oregano” from the words “mountain” which means mountain and “ganos” which means splendor was a symbol of joy and happiness. While it was widely used as a decoction in spasms, poisonings, to relieve swelling and as an antiseptic. Hippocrates, the father of Medicine, used oregano to treat gastric pain and various respiratory ailments.

Even today, oregano is considered a healing herb because of the healing properties it contains, most notably carvacrol . Specifically, the healing properties of oregano include:

Friday – dosage

For decoction : In a kettle with water, boil 1 kg of oregano for a few minutes, strain it and drink it.

For infusion : In a cup of boiling water pour 1 kg of oregano, cover and leave for 10-15 minutes. Strain it and drink it, preferably hot.

For bath : To stimulate and soothe our skin, we can add a decoction of oregano in the bath water. (Boil for a few minutes, 80-100 g of oregano in 1 liter of water).

For gargling : For mouth problems, ulcers and toothache you can gargle 2-3 times a day with oregano decoction.

For dandruff and dry skin : Oregano is extremely effective in fighting dandruff and dry skin. Put a handful of oregano in a liter of water and let it simmer on low heat for 5 minutes. Strain and use the liquid before shampooing while gently massaging your scalp. The recipe is very effective.

Additional Uses of Oregano

Oregano is a good preservative for creamy foods such as mayonnaise and salad dressings.

– You can flavor with oregano olive oils, which in this way are preserved longer, vinegar and black olives.

– Oregano is extremely fragrant for our food and salads

– Oregano oil is used in the preparation of soaps, myrrh and toothpaste.

Side effects

  • May cause stomach upset
  • Some people may be allergic to the family of Lamia angiosperms dicotyledonous plants, which also includes oregano, so they may develop an allergic reaction.
